Fistula Survivor Ripta Begum receives Sewing Machine from the Director (Health) of Sylhet division as Rehabilitation Support

Ripta Begum's Journey of Hope and Recovery

A story of resilience, support, and transformation

In a heartfelt moment of rehabilitation support, a sewing machine was handed over to Ripta Begum, a 35-year-old recovered obstetric fistula patient from Tahirpur Upazila. The event took place during the monthly coordination meeting organized by the Civil Surgeon’s Office, Sunamganj. This initiative was supported by CIPRB and UNFPA Bangladesh under the “End Obstetric Fistula Programme” in Sylhet division.

The meeting, chaired by Dr. Jasim Uddin, Civil Surgeon, Sunamganj, saw the participation of Dr. Anisur Rahman, Director (Health), Sylhet Division, as the chief guest. Other attendees included the Deputy Civil Surgeon, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officers, and distinguished guests.

Ripta's Journey

Ripta Begum, a resident of a village surrounded by the waters of Tangoar haor in Tahirpur Upazila, endured a heartbreaking journey. She suffered from obstetric fistula for 20 years following unskilled home deliveries, losing her first two children in the process. Her life changed on February 6, 2024, when she was identified by CIPRB’s Fistula Coordinator and referred to the Fistula Corner of Sunamganj Sadar Hospital.

On July 19, 2024, she underwent surgery at MAMMS Hospital-Dhaka and returned home fully recovered on August 8, 2024. Recognizing her need for economic rehabilitation, stakeholders, including a social worker, arranged a sewing machine for her.

“I can now run my family through this sewing machine. You’ve done so much for me, from treatment to support. Please pray for me so that I can live happily with my husband and children.” – Ripta Begum

Collective Impact

This initiative reflects a broader commitment to not only treating marginalized women but also empowering them to rebuild their lives. As Ripta embarks on a new chapter with her sewing machine, her story stands as a testament to the power of collective efforts in transforming lives.
